A Dark Surprise

Linus frowned slightly down at the paper in his hands, leaning back in his office chair as he adjusted the reading glasses on his nose. This couldn't be right... even with all his years of knowing the Castle guardians, they had never once shown the inclination to do anything like this. It begged questioning...

"Jace... Jason!"

The blonde's calls soon brought over his dark haired best friend, the knight poking his head into the office looking surprised. "What's up, boss-man?" He asked with a grin, moving to slouch against the doorway, arms folded. Linus's pale eye scanned the letter once more before he turned to look at Jason, pulling off his glasses. Standing from his plush chair, he waved the letter with a frown. "Did you know about this?" He demanded, walking over to the knight.

Jason's brows furrowed slightly at the harried look on his friend's face, and he reached out to nab the letter, scanning it quickly before letting out a surprised huff of laughter. "No f*cking way, man. Seriously? They're actually letting go of one of their precious Trues?" He asked incredulously, the lopsided smile on his lips showing his disbelief.

Linus shrugged slightly helplessly, a breathless laugh escaping him in turn. "Two, actually. Twins. However I think the second is being shipped elsewhere. Something about them needing to free up some space in the Castle." He reclaimed the letter to stare over it again. "...A True Aphotic. Well screw me sideways..." He said in shock, causing the brunette next to him to erupt into surprised laughter at the SPaVES manager's uncharacteristic words.

A week later, Linus stood out at the carpark of the lesser-used Valley End building, bouncing nervously on the balls of his feet as he watched the Castle's trailer pull up. As the trailer pulled to a stop on the gravel, not even bothering to park properly, there came from within the steel container a loud bang and an inhuman screech before silence fell once more.

Linus narrowed his eyes and cut his gaze discreetly over to Jason, who looked equally bewildered and partially suspicious of the noise. Linus frowned and turned his attention back over towards the woman who now made her way over towards them, decked out in the Castle's regulation uniform. "...Miss Bouvier..." He said slowly, not quite a greeting and almost a question as another thud rang out from the trailer.

The French-Indian lady smiled winningly as she came to a stop in front of the pair of men, settling into what Linus recognised to be a military stance. "Mis-ter D'Vier. The castle thanks you for your kind patronage regarding our... space... issue." She said in a bright, polite voice, studiously ignoring the thuds and whistles of increasing volume coming from the trailer.

Jason, however, was not quite so coy, and he immediately stepped between Linus and the woman, gesturing madly towards the shut trailer. "What exactly IS that?" He asked, slightly hysterical. Areena Bouvier's face expressed polite interest and then feigned surprise. "Oh, yes, quite so. Forgive me. Gentlemen, if you would." She called over her shoulder, gesturing to the Castle attendees that had come with her. Immediately, the two men began to unlock the trailer doors, one of the men disappearing inside to be greeted by a shrill whinny and what sounded suspiciously like a hoof meeting an iron-toed boot.

Areena turned her serene smile back to the shellshocked men in front of her, tipping her chin and offering them a jaunty wave. "Well, I must be off. Much to do, you see. Please take good care of Atra Romeus, goodbye!" With that, she was gone in a flurry of robe, safely ensconced back in her cab.

Infront of them, the Castle attendants were leading a gleaming black stallion out of the van, his dark coat glistening with the sheen of sweat. Though both the men were rather burly, even they were having trouble with the monster of a stallion, who was clearly trying his best to steal mouthfuls of the men's uniforms and flesh. After a brief struggle with the stallion, one of the men let out a yell as he was knocked back off his feet as the stallion head butted him, causing him to let go of the lead.

There was a moment as everyone in the yard simply stared blankly at the lead rope now in the hands of a single man alone, before the stallion roared into motion, rearing and tearing his lead from the remaining man's hand, and sprinting off towards Valley End's paddocks and racetrack, trumpeting his victory loudly.

As the two Castle workers helped each other over to the cab, and the van started and slowly pulled out, Linus and Jason remained standing where they were, hearing the screams and panicked neighing somewhere behind them.

After a moment, Jason paused and cleared his throat awkwardly, still staring at the empty space where the trailer had been.

"Linus... correct me if I'm wrong, but... I think we've been duped."

The long groan at his side was the only answer he got for a long time.
