A Last Gift

Description

And to think, it had all been going so well.

Unlike with the other horses he had brought from Alderann, this time the prince purposely stuck around to make sure Seorm was settling in well. Perhaps it was out of loyalty to his missing friend - perhaps he simply wanted a holiday. Whatever it was, the result was that he was around when Seorm finally went into labour.

Now the mare had seemed to be improving marginally. Her daily paddock meetings with Ileador seemed to have become a habit she had settled into, and she had even begun nipping correctively at Itheris whenever he got a bit too rough with his play - a motherly sign that Linus had seen as encouraging. She began eating her food and drinking properly, and as the days went by, she got noticeably stronger.

With all these positive signs, it was easy to understand how the stablehands managed to miss the fact that - eating or not - Seorm still had no interest in living. All that she did was done for her foal. A final gift to the baby she would leave behind, in order to help give her child a boost of strength as it came into the world.

The day she went into labour, both Linus and Tzarik had been away meeting a new potential importer for the refugeed warhorses. This meant that when they got the call about Seorm's foaling, they were already quite far away, and by the time they made it back to SPaVES, it was too late.

Seorm had given birth to a tiny little foal, a dainty but plump little filly with her mother's face and striping. However it seemed that after foaling, the pale striped mare had simply given up on life. Despite the best efforts of the in-house veterinarian, Dr Soleil, and despite the fact the mare actually had no injuries or medical issues to speak of, she simply closed her eyes and let her soul leave her body.

Both Linus and Tzarik were understandably upset - the prince rather more so, as he had known the mare for most of her life; had seen her charge into battles fearlessly with his best friend astride her, had seen her as a foal when his friend had laughingly picked her out of a crowded horse sale as the 'cream of the crop'.

In memory of the beautiful mare that had brought her baby into the world, yet left it all too soon... they gave the filly the only name that would fit;

Seorm.
