Personality

As he has aged, so too has his personality evolved. As a young buck, Vita is far less open with his heart. He has his family and his few friends - and as far as he's considered, he needs nobody else. A bit of a hermit by necessity, due to circumstances surrounding his parentage, Vita is growing steadily more xenophobic as he gets older. Where once he would welcome strangers with a shy smile and hope, he now regards those he does not know with suspicion - if not outward dislike.

Vita is extremely protective of his family and friends. As far as he's concerned, nobody else matters, and he would bring down all of Glenmore around him without blinking an eye if it were necessary to save his loved ones. He is a bit jealous of their affections too. Having been pushed into the role of guardian from a young age, having had to look after his mother and his youngest siblings, Vita now tries almost obsessively to keep tabs on everyone. He is used to being the one his siblings go to when they need to talk or need help, and he can rather upset when they turn to others instead. Especially if said others are strangers.

Personality-wise, Vita is a quiet, straightforward buck. He is very mellow in his words and actions for the most part, with a soothing voice and soft eyes. When angered, however, he loses his temper quickly and will not hesitate to verbally rip into someone.

Vita is a child with a strong sense of responsibility and a need to prove himself and to be loved. He has slight abandonment issues, and he is often a tad clingy once he finds someone who expresses care for him, however his attachment comes with an inherent need to protect those he cares for with everything he has.

Vita is unusually emotionally advanced, with an understanding and empathy far beyond his age. While not the most intelligent of all the fawns, nor the biggest or strongest physically, he has an ability to sense exactly what someone needs from him – a trait that has made him especially capable when it comes to tending his relationship with his dam. Had he had the normal self-absorbed mentality of a child, his relationship with his mother likely would have been far more strained, or even non-existent. However thanks to whatever gift it was that provided him with the ability to understand adult emotions, he has managed to forge and retain a strong – if detached – relationship with his mother.

With other fawns, Vita is cheerful and playful, if a little shy. For the most part, he fits in well, however there will always be the occasional ignorant fawn that taunts him about his absent, ‘evil’ father, and his “half-black-heart”. Though these words will always hurt, Vita has learnt how to anticipate the words of others based on body language and facial expressions – an ability which has helped him escape many a roughing from larger, meaner fawns.

Vita is particularly fond of does, and finds their daintiness and sweet hearts charming and admirable. He falls in childish love with just about every older doe he meets, seeing them all as perfection personified, however no doe will ever compare to his mother in his eyes.

As for stags, Vita admires them greatly, and he wishes more than anything to become a guardian of the herd, like some of the strongest stags. The tales of Earran the Oak Prince are among Vita’s favourites, and whenever such a story is being retold, he will always find a way to sit in and listen.

Relationships and History

>> Dall (athena102)

Vita’s relationship with his mother is his most precious and is also the most convoluted and difficult one for him. From a young age, his mother has been a distant wraith within his life – there, but not fully there. It was not that she was a bad mother – not at all. Her inherent sweet nature ensured she gave all she could spare to her son, and he was never wanting for anything growing up. However the two do not share the open and giving love that usually exists between a mother and her child. Dall was the sweetest presence in his life, undoubtedly. However her presence was more like that of an older sister, or a good family friend – caring, but always somewhat distant,

As Vita grew old enough to fend for himself, his mother drew further away, finally let loose from the obligation she had to keep her son alive. The two would still see each other, and greet each other with the gentlest of nuzzles and murmurs – however that was the extent of their relationship. Though he had never truly felt the full force of his mother’s pure love, Vita still felt this loss keenly, and the evidence began to show in his waning figure, and his declining eating habits. With time, her son’s condition became known to Dall, and it became apparent to her she could not make the break as cleanly as she had planned. For all that the memory of her son’s conception remained a painful slash in her memories, he was still her son, and she could not stand by and watch as he wasted away and died a slow death to heartbreak.

So, she began a small ritual. Something that would bring comfort to both her and her son.

The first night she finally approached her son once more, it was with the slightest tremble in her dainty hooves, and despair in her poor heart as she vague shadow of gold which lay alone amongst a pile of dark leaves. Reaching him, she dropped her gift aside, unneeded for now, and simply touched her soft lips to his mane, before sliding her face forwards to press her cheek gently to his. Nothing was said between the two, however Vita’s small body uncurled from the tense ball he had held himself in. The two stayed curled loosely together, in an imitation of all the other doe-fawn pairs that resided within the Glens, until the untimely arrival of dawn. As the sun broke over the surface of the horizon, Dall finally presented her gift to her son – a string of berries loosely tied to his tail, to match the ones that adorned her broken horn. Then, with the barest touch of her tongue to his cheek, she was gone in a swish of a tail.

Their night time resting pose was never duplicated again, much to Vita’s disappointment - having had a taste of his mother’s love, it was hard to have it slip from him so soon once again. However she continued to leave him sprigs of berries whenever she saw his getting wilted or dry, and he came to anticipate this gift, and cherish it as the purest sign of his dam’s love.

Vita knows that no matter what her shortcomings or her inability to show her care in the normal ways, that his mother loves him dearly. Even without the gifts of berries and the occasional shy smile she gifts to him, it all lies in his name.

Beloved.

>> Kira

Vita doesn’t really have a relationship with his father. To be honest, he doesn’t know of the stag’s name, nor what he’s like. For obvious reasons, his dam has never spoken of the occurrence, nor has she ever told him of his father. All he has gleaned from the whispers around the herd is that his sire was a ruthless marauder from the dreaded Blackwood clan, and that Vita should be glad of the fact he has never met the black demon.

As a fawn, he has no particular feeling towards the nonexistent stag in his life. Dall never spoke of him, nor did she treat her son badly, so Vita had nothing to blame on the notorious Blackwood stag. However as he grows older, and begins to understand more and more about the conditions of his own birth, and just how much he truly missed out on with his relationship with his dam – a fact he learns only after she births his sibling without duress – that he truly begins to feel the seeds of resentment grow within him. However this vague dislike has no particular place in his life – he has no plans to hunt down his sire or anything similar. All the dark past provided by his sire have done are instill a greater need within Vita to do his best to protect the Glenmore herd, so that his mother will be safe, and so that no other does will have to suffer the same fate as her.

That being said, Vita shares some traits with his sire – some of which include his sense of honour, and – what he will eventually learn is – black magic. Perhaps as he grows and discovers more of this trait, he will be forced to seek out his sire to control his abilities. Vita also possesses a certain sense of power-hunger, though his is not focused on clawing his way to the top ranks, so much as reaching a position of influence in the herd, so that he may make his mother proud of him.

>> Solas (Haiisu)
Vita's relationship with his middle brother is an odd one. As fawns, they were both very close - a result of Vita's absolute devotion and awe of his baby brother, and of Solas' fanwish hero-worship of his older brother. The two were as close as thieves and could practically read each others' minds simply by looking at the other - something that often surprised and amazed outsiders to their bond.
However age and growth brought a painful turn in this relationship, with Solas beginning to chafe under Vita's singleminded need to protect the family from everything that could potentially harm them - including the rest of Glenmore society. This was only exacerbated by the birth of the twins.

Nowaday, they clash and fight more often than not, arguing when left alone for too long. They are two strong personalities and they often anger each other with their views and priorities, however when it comes down to it all, they still share the same tight bond that they always had as children. Except instead of a blind faith in each other, they now test and push and pull the other constantly. In truth, the two love each other deeply - perhaps deeper than even Dall knows, due to their sharing similar core emotions of rejection, anger and fear. As it is, though they often fight and argue over everything to do with the way they go about everyday life, when facing outside adversities, the two still share one mind and can anticipate what the other needs in a tight spot.

>> The twins (athena102)
Vita absolutely adores his youngest siblings, and he looks upon them as a the bright spot of what he's starting to see as a very dark society. From a young age, Vita was often told by his mother to protect the twins, and to do everything he could to protect them. Whenever his mother set off on her travels and explorations of the lands, it was Vita that cared for them and ensured their safety. As such, he is very protective of the twins and will often react extremely negatively if he believes the twins are in danger or at risk of getting hurt.

That being said, though, he fully understands that his youngest siblings are different from him. They can't exist solely on the outskirts of Glenmore the way he and Dall have learned to do - they were born for greater things. As such, he has no qualms letting the twins venture into the heart of Glenmore to visit their royal relations and to make connections with the other fawnlings that reside there.

>> Vasilliy (Dappleclaw)
Vita's closest friend since childhood, though he doesn't remember how they met. The pale colt is everything he wishes he could be - handsome, accepted, and on the fast track to being a royal guard. However despite this, Vita holds no ill will towards his friend; how could he, when he cares so much for him, and vice versa? Vasilliy was the first outsider who ever accepted him openly, with no second thoughts. He never held Vita's mixed parentage against him, nor did he ever say anything about the fact that Vita could never simply go and play like the other fawns, since he was always tasked with protecting his younger siblings.

Instead, Vasilliy earned a permanent place in Vita's heart by not only accepting these qualities, but helping Vita out with them. Vas is one of Vita's fiercest supporters when Vita is mocked about his 'half black heart', and instead of leaving Vita behind when he had to babysit, he would often join Vita in his task, playing with the twins and helping his golden friend watch them.

As it is, Vas is like an honorary member of the Forest Family.

On Magic

As a fawn, Vita never really heard anything of magic, except in the most abstract terms. This was mostly because Dall never expected magic to have any sort of impact in his life, what with the earth magic of Glenmore being a trait of the Royals, and the black magic of the dreaded Blackwood being an almost solely doe-descended trait. However somewhere around the age of 3, it becomes clear to her that her son begins to exhibit signs of possessing abilities of the dark arts – a fact that renews the fear Dall had all but discarded up till that point.

Vita’s black magic abilities will never truly get explored unless somebody opens his eyes to his abilities, as his mother warned him to keep his abilities secret, telling him that the magic he possesses is the earth magic of Glenmore that none but the royals may practice freely. What with his intense respect for the royals, and his desire to please his dam, Vita will keep him magic secret indefinitely.

However in his own time, when alone in the woods, Vita likes to experiment with his magic, playing out the adventures of Earran the Oaken Prince, and the magic-wielding royal stags that comprised the stories of his childhood.

However he can’t help but wonder why, no matter how hard he tries, he can never do anything but summon weird shadows
