Personality: Friendly | Not the Brightest | Loyal | Loves Kids | Handy | Creative

Once a naive, gullible kid, Ollie has since matured and grown into himself. Friendly and extroverted, Ollie enjoys spending time with the other merchants, along with the friends he made during his time in the Guard. As a young buck, Ollie spent a great deal of time chasing after his father's love, but he has since given up in that pursuit. He doesn't blame his father for rejecting him, though he still hurts over the dismissal.

Something he was surprised to discover he truly enjoyed was crafting toys. He loves the process of dreaming up interesting characters and making them real, using leaves and hewn wood. Having left the Guard ranks, he has now become something of an unofficial storyteller and merchant, using his limitless imagination and toy creations to illustrate his tales.

Appearance: Ollie is a very neat, handsome young buck. His expression is always open and friendly and his bountiful burls are always kept brushed and clean, since that's a habit his mother instilled in him. He is unscarred and has a smooth coat due to his rather sheltered life till now. He tends towards gaining lean muscle as opposed to any bulk -- even if he tried, he'd never be able to get more muscular than he currently is.

History: Ollie's story technically starts before he was born, with his parents. His mother was a quiet, gentle herbalist of common blood who occasionally visited the guard barracks as a nursedoe and healer. One summer she found herself in a bit of a whirlwind romance with (what she assumed was) a handsome young guardsman. The two danced around each other for weeks, she trying to keep her professionalism about her while he, being of royal blood, knew fraternisation with common does was discouraged. However, all their self-denial would come to naught, for when rut rolled around that Autumn, they were immediately taken up by hormones and young infatuation.

Fast forward to a year later, and the nursedoe returned to the barracks, this time with a little baby in tow. She sought out the father of her new son, but he was nowhere to be found. It was only later, after further delicate questioning, that she learnt that the buck she sought was not actually a guard, was never actually a guard, but was instead a royal who trained with them on occassion, and he had returned to the New Oak to rejoin fine society. Under the guise of bringing herbs to a matronly old Lady, she slipped into the royal glades and went looking for her young lover. When she reached the correct glade, she found herself face-to-face with the stag, now almost unrecognisable due to his regal carriage and royal trappings. She was embarassed and tried to sneak away however he recognised her and called her by name. She introduced her son to him and quietly admitted her shame: the colt had been born premature, and as such both she and the colt had nearly died.

Her lover was horrified and gave her and her son sanctuary in the family glade, lying to his parents as to the reason for her presence. The doe was initially pleased by his protection, but it was clear that he, while clearly fond of her, felt he had made a huge mistake in siring a child. Her upset was worsened when, as the months passed, it became clear that their son was... off. He was loving and playful and all a fawn should be, but he always looked a bit too vacant, took a bit too long to understand. Driven by her shame at her lover's awkward treatment and her failure in producing a healthy son, she snuck away in the dead of night, taking her son and running with him to the Loch.

They lived happily, mother and son. Her heartbreak was tempered by the peace she felt at doing a good deed and having a son who loved her more than the world itself. She told her son nothing but good of his father and spoke at length on the honour of the Royal Guards of Glenmore. The years went on and all was well.... until one day it wasn't.

A freak accident in the middle of a storm had Cuilass tripping into a hole and breaking her leg. No herbs in the woods would ever be strong enough to heal such a wound and, despite her son's fretful best efforts, she soon succumbed to infection and blood poisoning.

His mother and only companion dead, Olliar did all he could think to do: he returned to Glenmore to find his father. He had a name and, despite the large population, soon had a face to put to the name. The stag was understandably shocked by the appearance of his long-lost son and saddened by the news of Cuilass' death, but he had no place for Ollie in his life. So Ollie left and was somewhat aimless till he realised there was one clear path for him.

Join the Royal Guard and become a stag his mother would have been proud of, like his father.

Much of his interest in becoming a guard hung on his parents' expectations: first he wanted to please his mother, then it became all about proving himself to his estranged father. However once he realised that it was unrealistic to continue chasing his father's favour and that he truly didn't enjoy his job, he gave up life as a guard to become a tinkerer. Doing so tarnished his reputation somewhat in the eyes of the herd, and he was seen as a drop-out, incapable of sticking it out. Nonetheless, he is happier now, and dearly enjoys spending his time in the Oldegrove with the other merchants.

Relationships:

  • With his mother:
    • His mother was his world and he still misses her every day. He talks to her, sometimes, randomly and out loud when he's on patrol or alone. He gets weird looks for this but it's a harmless habit so nobody really condemns him much for it.
  • With his father:
    • Ollie still cares deeply for his father, though he has finally accepted that he will never be part of the older stag's life.
    • Ollie loves his father though he's only met the stag a handful of times. Having been raised on heroic tales of his father, Ollie still tries very hard to model himself off of his mother's stories of his father. Even after the stag's gentle rejection, Ollie still wants nothing more than to be accepted and loved by his father. With his mother now receding into his memory, everything he does now is done to please his sire.
