The Pari Fairy

Description

[s.] Pari; [pl.] Paries

What is it?

The Pari Fairy is a land-fish - a strange creature of Alderann that travels through the air, propelling itself with it's fins. The Pari Fairy is only partially bound by gravity - an interesting phenomenon thought to be a result of their inborn magic.

Though not a fairy by the classic definition of the word, the Pari Fairy was so named due to it's shy, stranger-wary nature, it's ability to fly, and it's ability to perform magic. The Pari are a gentle, peaceable race of creatures incapable of human speech, though it's believed that elves are able to understand their patterns of speech (formed with a series of chirps, hums and sighs).

All Paries possess inborn magic, and every Pari carries the ability to become incorporeal. On top of that base ability, however, Paries also have other magic capabilities.

Male Paries have much stronger magic (ranging from level 6-10), though their abilities are less diverse.
Female Paries have weaker and less potent magic (level 1-5), however they are far more versatile with their magic/

Where is it found?

The Pari Fairy makes it's home within trees, and as such wild Paries are always found within forests. The biggest colony of Paries is located deep within the Silverwoods, though it's very rare to sight one.

What does it look like?

The Pari is a flat, fish-like creature roughly the size of a dinner plate. In appearance, they are remarkably similar to the Earthen Angelfish, though the Pari has a few differences - most namely, the ribbon-like fins that trail dreamily after the Pari as it drifts about.

How long do they live for?

Paries are immortal creatures, and in the wild they usually live on unless they meet an untimely end by being hunted or eaten. Domesticated Paries will often live out their lives with their chosen companion, and when the companion passes on, they will either choose to remain with another, return to the wilderness, or - depending on how strong the bond was - they may even fade from sadness.

What social structures does it obey?

Paries are very much social creatures, and when in the wild they live in large family groups. Families consisting of great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, sons, daughters and grandchildren are common, though the numbers are controlled by the Paries' natural instinct not to overbreed. Paries generally mate for life, and will often have a single fletchling of their own.

Paries are homing creatures, and if un-influenced by outside forces, they will live out their lives in the same tree they were born in. However if a Pari chooses to attach itself to another living being, that creature then becomes their 'home', and the homing instinct is transferred.

How does one acquire a Pari?

Paries can only be obtained with a visit to the Silverwoods of Alderann, and even then it's not guaranteed that one will take a shine to you.

However for those interested, expedition teams are often organised to go in search of the elusive Pari Fairy.
